2002 Syrah
This Library Release Syrah is a blend of fruit grown in our cool-climate Los Alamos Vineyard (78%), from two distinct clones, and our warmer Valley View Vineyard east of Solvang (22%). Crafted from the long, cool 2002 growing season, the grapes were harvested in late October and fermented in small, open-top fermenters with regular punch-downs over nearly two weeks. The wine was then aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels before bottling.
After twenty-four years of careful cellaring, this Syrah has evolved into a fascinating expression of mature Santa Barbara County wine. The once-bold fruit has given way to a beautifully earthy, savory character, with aromas of dried black plum, leather, tobacco, cedar, and forest floor layered with notes of black olive, cracked pepper, and dried herbs. Subtle hints of smoked meat, truffle, and warm spice add further complexity.
The palate is graceful and textured, with softened tannins supporting flavors of dried blackberry, balsamic, cocoa, and savory spice. While its youthful power has mellowed, the wine remains remarkably vibrant, offering a long, nuanced finish that rewards slow contemplation. This Library Release showcases the unexpected longevity of Syrah and the remarkable character that can emerge through decades of patient aging.
