May, 2024
In the vineyard, we are emerging from two very wet seasons in a row. We still have one month left of potential frost risk. Up until now, we have only had one night that we had to protect the vineyards. We ran sprinklers and air fans to protect, and it was successful. Temperatures were flirting with below 32°F.
Our vine growth, even with this much rain, is progressing well and we have already started our mildew sprays. Our first look at the new vine growth suggests a medium-sized crop. The added rain is giving us plenty of growth. I expect some flowering in May.
2022 Chenin Blanc: This variety has been completely overlooked over the past few years. At one time, it was California’s leading white wine. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Pinot Grigio have taken over most of the white wine production. It hasn’t been planted in some of the better vineyards. This wine is extremely good and a very good example of what Chenin can be. The Los Alamos area is perfect for the variety. You will find this one with lots of flavor and an exceptional nose. It resembles the Chenin Blanc of the Loire Valley in France. This one will surprise you.
2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Valley View: This is probably the best buy of all the wines we make. This is our original Cab with all five Bordeaux varieties which has consistently scored above 90 points with a Gold Medal and 93 pts at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, a Gold Medal and 90 pts at the Orange County Wine Competition, and 90 points at Wine Enthusiast. This quality at our current pricing should be bought by the case.
2021 Merlot: Merlot is completely overlooked. When grown in the right place, it is everything a red wine should be. Megan has done a great job of making this wine. The color, the flavor, and the mouthfeel resemble a Merlot from the Right Bank of Bordeaux where Merlot is king. Merlot belongs in a cooler region and with heavier soils, and Los Alamos fits the bill. Supply is short on this wine.
By the time you read this, I will be with 40 wine club members in Tuscany where the rivers flow with wine! I am looking forward to returning to Antinori where the Super Tuscan reigns. God bless Sangiovese!
