May, 2025
Now that spring is here, the vines have opened their buds and growth is from 6-12 inches. We can see the first signs of grapes emerging.
We have had a shortage of rain this year so I am doing a little bit of irrigating. A normal season brings 15 inches of rain or better but this year, we have had right around 5 inches to date. To me, the potential crop looks to be about normal. I do see some variations in bunch size but it is a little early to make any forecast.
We had an interesting tasting at the winery in March. We had around 40 people attend a private tasting of eight library wines with eight food pairings. These wines covered a period of over 15 years. Megan was able to give the group a good analysis of the wines and I was able to give a little history on the vineyard locations. It was a very enjoyable evening with good wines and good people.
2023 Rosé of Pinot Noir: This wine scored 93 points in Wine Enthusiast, a high score for a crowded category like rosé, plus 90+ points at the Los Angeles County Wine Competition. Rosés do not usually score that high. This one is 100% Pinot Noir. The skin contact was minimal and, as a result, there is less color in this one, which is not a bad thing. Serve chilled. Built for summer.
2019 Pinot Noir, Goodchild High 9: This wine scored 92 points at Wine Enthusiast and 93 points at Tasting Panel. The “High 9” vineyard continues to make outstanding wines. This vintage is 100% Clone 667, one of the better clones of Pinot Noir. The wine shows the influence of the cool weather of the Santa Maria Valley appellation, and it is exceptional. Enjoy with grilled salmon, barbecue chicken, and light spring fare.
2021 Cabernet Franc: This is my pet vineyard. It is located in my yard at Valley View. This is an excellent example of Cabernet Franc - one of the best vintages we have made. The grapes were the product of perfect weather during the growing season with a long cool spring like the one we are experiencing now. The 2021 vintage is approachable now but would also age well. I would suggest putting a couple of bottles of this one away.
