May, 2023
We just returned from our trip of trips to Croatia. We had one of the best times ever, which I attribute to the wonderful people who accompanied us, the outstanding Croatian wines, the Croatian people, and the history of this unique country. The boat ride was unbelievable. Much more could be said. It was all you could ask for. Of course, I had to put up with Jill, Andy, and Anjie. We had the time of our life. Just a marvelous experience. God is good and we are thankful.
I returned to a wide-awake vineyard that is not hurting for water. This could be one of the most interesting growing seasons ever. Good or bad, I’ll blame it on the weather.
2021 Chardonnay, Goodchild: I have been growing Chardonnay in Santa Maria for more than 53 years, and it hasn’t changed. It has a style of its own. This wine is a good example of the past, distinct and with a lot of Chardonnay character. It can be enjoyed with food and makes an exceptional cocktail - the taste of Santa Maria. Enjoy now. Production was limited and it won’t be around long.
2018 Hidden Asset: This is a “taste-good” blend, soft in the mouth but bold in flavor. The combination of Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah gives an abundance of color and character. I was recently at an event where it was poured alongside other wines and the flow of compliments did not surprise me because it was made to express three great varieties. It took us four months of blending trials to find the right mix. If you like blends, this is your wine.
2019 Cabernet Franc: True Cabernet Franc is distinct in flavor, color, and in the nose. This vintage reminds me of dried leaves, raisins, and has a nice tang to it, which is hard to explain. It’s in the finish and in the nose. Again, true Cabernet Franc should be easy to recognize. It is different. This one is a real example of Cabernet Franc. I pay special attention to these vines. They grow in my yard! It’s a daily challenge.
I expect to see you all in that yard next month for our Summer BBQ. In August, we have our annual Harvest Party and Blessing of the Grapes when Father John comes out and blesses the new harvest. In September, we will shuttle 45 wine club members across three of our vineyards, tasting wines on the bus and at each stop. We hope you can join us.
P.S. To all of you who were on the Croatia cruise, you are the best.
